Barstow Plumber – Drip, Drip, Drip…
Drip, Drip, Drip… that Leaky Faucet!
That common faucet Drip is not only a nuisance that keeps you awake at night… it’s an Indication of more expensive repairs to come.
Most of us have endured the constant Drip, Drip, Drip of a leaky faucet… and aside from the noise and rust or mineral deposits that build up in the sink or tub… we have a tendency to try and ignore the problem. After all… it’s Only a worn out seal or washer, isn’t it?
While it’s true that most faucet drips can be quick and simple repairs when they first start dripping, ignoring a drippy valve can eventually cause permanent damage to the internal structure of a valve seat. Considering the skyrocketing prices of modern faucets, it makes Dollars and Sense to maintain your plumbing investments.
You see, over time, a little drip of water can cause a lot of damage. A lot more damage than most of us realize.
While “water always tends to follow the path of least resistance”, like slowly slipping past a worn or damaged seal, it’s also causing more and more damage with each drip… first to the seal, then on to more important internal faucet structures. We have to remember that we are dealing with one of nature’s strongest forces. Barstow water is especially damaging because we are dealing with Water under Pressure and water with a lot of Minerals that slowly sand-blast the internal structure of even the best made faucets!
If the water slipping past a worn seal meets any resistance along its path through the metallic internal parts of your faucet, it can cause grooves and channels to form in the valve seat or stem. It takes diligence and persistence to change a worn seal each time it starts leaking. The pressure and chemical content of Bartow’s water makes it necessary for me to consistently replace worn or damaged seals. However, if I procrastinate, I am always amazed by the amount of damage that can occur in a relatively short time. I also find that when I procrastinate, I generally have to replace a “Grooved” valve seat in my home water faucets on a regular basis. That’s right… the pressurized Water slowly cuts a groove that can be 1/16” to 1/8” deep, right through the metal in a valve seat, no matter if it is brass or stainless steel… or totally destroy the thin metal portion of a valve stem.
You may have also noticed a build-up of mineral deposits on a dripping faucet. If left unattended, these deposits can easily eat their way through a faucets nozzle structure, leaving no Choice but Total Replacement of the Entire Faucet. I don’t know about you, but there are better things I like to spend my money on, rather than total faucet replacement.
That constant Drip, Drip, Drip is a reminder to inspect and change damaged seals and washers before more extensive and expensive damage begins to occur. Most people can find and follow instructions for changing a leaky faucet seal on the Web. However, if you have a Drip that you have been ignoring, and you do not have the tools or the know-how to do it yourself… I would suggest calling an expert plumber to solve the problem… before a more expensive solution is necessary.
